The twenty glorious years of DVD format is now slowly fainting, as it has waged a war against its latest competitors Blu-ray player that is busy in gaining popularity across the world.


The conventional DVD format can support 4.7 GB data, however the demand for higher-capacity, more advanced data storage device was soaring for accommodating HD video that requires larger space. 

The feature of the player is 1.2 mm thick and 120 mm extended in diameter equal to the size of CD and DVD. Though both HD-DVD and Blu-ray come with similar functionalities in various aspects, but there are specific differences between these two data storage system.

Difference between Blu-ray player and HD-DVD

  1. The first one is certainly the capacity as the lens integrated into Blu-ray comes with greater numerical aperture compared to HD-DVD. The laser spots can be concentrated with finer precision to store more data on the equal sized disc. This permits the Blu ray player to contain 25GB in per layer; on the other hand, HD-DVD is only capable of holding 15GB per layer.
  2. Blu-ray has also incorporated greater data transfer ratio for audio and video. The larger capacity and data transfer ratio would enable the movie studio to release the movies with greater quality video and audio through Blu-ray in comparison to HD-DVD format.
  3. The second one is content, Blu-ray format has gained immense supports from the movie studios and they have broadly welcomed as the successor of DVD format. Where older movies would be available in DVD format only, the new movies are usually released in Blu-ray format. As DVD has been ruling in the market since 1996 hence you would find it easier to get a movie in DVD format.
  4. The third one is the range of hardware support. Whereas Blu-ray provides broad support for the major consumer electronics and the format would be also supported PS3 console, contrary, the HD-DVD format supports far fewer hardware. That simply suggests that you will be gifted with several choices when it comes to utilize Blu-ray with hardware and players.
  5. Each of the next generation DVD formats consists of single and dual layer formats. In case, of HD DVD it suggests data capacity size of 15 GB, 30 GB respectively, and its 25GB and 50GB in case of Blu-ray.

Window does not own any inbuilt program to operate Blu ray discs; hence, you have to equip the PC with right hardware and blu-ray software. In the market, several companies are offering Blu ray player that won’t stop excite you.
